The penultimate B vitamin is better known in the supplement world as folic acid. Hardly anyone refers to it as vitamin B9. Folic acid was first identified by researcher Lucy Wills in 1931 as a nutrient required to prevent anemia (low red blood cells) during pregnancy. For a number of years, it was called the Wills Factor. Chemists later extracted folic acid from spinach leaves. "Folic" is derived from the Latin word folium meaning leaf.
